Tango Y Tango is inspired by the Tango art forms of Argentina and Spain. Combining elements of both Argentinian and Flamenco Tangos, the piece features a soprano saxophone representing the bandoneón common in Argentine Tango, while the marimba is featured playing the role of the Flamenco guitar from the Spanish style. The opening section is the Argentine Tango. The middle section, featuring the marimba, is the Flamenco Tango. The final section combines elements of both to bring the piece to an exciting close.
Performance notes
Players with a clapping part should be sure to bring this out enough to be heard. During this section, the snare drum part could be played on cajón to simulate the more intimate ensemble typically used for Flamenco Tango. The marimba player, simulating the Flamenco guitar tremolo, should set the pace for the accelerando leading back to the closing section. The muted trombones are meant to simulate the rasgueado effect of the Flamenco guitar.
